Vernacular Architecture, What, Why and How?
Vernacular Architecture is the local architecture of a place or a region that reflects the local culture and tradition employing the local materials available and local skills and techniques of that region. This architecture may or may not be under the supervision of an architect. Vernacular architecture is the architecture that depicts the identity of that particular region as opposite to International architecture. It differs from the international style in its identity approach. Vernacular architecture speaks about who you actually are and where you actually belong. The vernacular architecture could never be same for any two places as the geographical as well as cultural values change from place to place.
Now the answer to why. Because of the demand and copy paste architecture, everyone is working with steel and glass without thinking about the regional context, the surrounding, and the neighbourhood. By just copying, the structure that has been constructed in Japan or maybe America, is being constructed here in India, without caring about the idea of what really is India. We have been cutting the forests for the construction of steel and glass cage on its place. So, we are not actually constructing, but instead destructing. Without critical thinking we are just building a man-made mound. We construct large and tall buildings with concrete and glass and metals without caring anything about the environment and to add on we are air-conditioning the inside to keep it cool while we are releasing a large amount of heat to the environment. This is a reason for the rising global warming issues and many more such issues that we are facing today. This is happening because we are not doing architecture, we are doing a copy paste work.
So, we can practice doing vernacular architecture keeping the context and local materials and techniques in mind. In this way we cannot just keep our environment from being deteriorated but also can contribute in saving a large amount of energy. The vernacular architecture is the answer to many such man-made hazards. We should try to inculcate more and more vernacular methods and techniques as much as possible.
