DILEMMA BETWEEN 5 YEAR AND 3 YEAR LLB COURSES

LLB can be one by two ways – going for a 5-year integrated course after 12th standard or going for a 3-year course after graduation. Earlier the course was available only after graduation. The students took 3 years to finish the Course but in 1987, NLSIU started with the five-year course. With time this practice continued and now CLAT Coaching is conducted for admission to NLUs. Both 3 years and 5 years courses have their pros and cons.

3 Year Course

A student can be admitted to this course after he has finished his graduation. LLB takes another 3 years to get over. Thus after 12, the student will take years to finish LLB. This used to be the only method of doing LLB earlier. This course is offered by Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, IP University, Punjab University, and many more. The minimum criteria for pursuing this course is a graduation degree accompanied by minimum aggregate marks depending on the university. There is no upper age limit for this course.

The benefit of a 3-year course is that the student gets to study in the field of his choice in graduation and then opt for LLB. This increases his knowledge and provides him with more exposure. The course for LLB focuses on legal subjects only thus ensuring that students learn more within limited time of joining the CLAT online classes. Along with this, students start with their internships from 1st semester itself. Thus, they become more aware of our legal system and acquire more practical knowledge.

5 Year Course

Students who are currently undergoing 12th or are done with it opt for the 5-year course. These days students prefer this course over the 3-year course. There are many reasons for the same. One benefit is that they save one year since the course gets over within 5 years. Secondly, in terms of placement, there cannot be a comparison between these two courses. All the top law firms of India prefer to hire from NLUs. Thirdly the kind of experience students get in this course is wonderful. They get exposed to so many activities and competitions, research work, and a lot more. A student after finishing this course becomes much more confident and smarter. If given a choice, the student should opt for a 5-year integrated course as this course has a lot of giving in return.
