What is Sustainable Architecture?

As per United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), buildings are major energy guzzlers, accounting for 40% greenhouse gas emissions, 25% of potable water consummation, and producing 20% of solid waste in the developed countries. With our depleting resources and increased demands, we need to find solutions to replenish resources, decrease the demands on energy, mitigate climatic change & reduce environmental impact.

Sustainable Architecture is the approach to create the built surrounding with minimum to no negative environmental impact using renewable materials & energy-efficient technologies. The definition of Sustainability is “Meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland Commission 1987)

Sustainability is not only about environmental conservation but talks about Social responsibility, and Economic Development. Sustainable design & development should be adopted as a philosophy of life which helps the communities live happy & healthy lives. It should aim to work with nature rather than against it. To achieve a truly Sustainable Building entire life cycle of the building from extraction to construction until total disposal needs to be understood, starting at the planning stage.

For future generations to survive we need to take care of our present resources. Sustainability can no longer be a choice. It is a necessity of the present.

Online course in Sustainable Architecture by IVS School of Design demystifies & helps understand the alternative terms like ‘Green Architecture, Biophilia, Climatic Responsive Architecture, Eco-friendly Building, Energy Efficient Buildings’. The curriculum is supported by eminent Architects & Sustainable practitioners discussing their projects and providing invaluable suggestions on the impact project. Understand the equation between the governments and international agencies laying the roadmap to promote Sustainable Building Design Course.
